The Andersons Corporate Headquarters

Dunbar Mechanical served as the plumbing contractor on The Andersons Corporate Headquarters project.

Aquarium Renovation at The Toledo Zoo

Originally opened in 1939, the Aquarium building at the Toledo Zoo is a W.P.A. (Works Progress Administration) era building.

On October 2, 2012 the Aquarium closed its doors to the public and construction began on a completely new interior with Dunbar Mechanical selected to build and install the most difficult of the construction requirements - the Life Support Systems. While

the exterior of the building remains basically unchanged, Dunbar also reinforced the structure and provided support for the many changes inside as the structural steel contractor. The chart below shows how the interior was transformed for the

March 27, 2015 re-opening:

The tropical saltwater drum filters are removed from the semi for installation. They were moved through an overhead door into the building. Once inside the Aquarium, the filters were carefully rigged for setting in place within the saltwater filtering tank.
With respect for the historical structure, Dunbar's careful planning ensured minimal structural alterations were made. Each saltwater drum filter was carefully delivered through the customized opening.
Once inside the area, Dunbar's professionals moved each tank into its proper position which were prepared and piped ahead of time. Here, all three filters are shown in place and ready for final piping..

Jay Hemdal is the Curator of Fishes and Invertebrates for the Toledo Zoo. He shared insights of the Aquarium Renovation in the Saltwater Smarts blog. As the Life-Support Systems prime mechanical contractor, Dunbar is especially excited to see Jay's insights on critical issues like the chilling systems we completed which are noted in Update 10: Cold Water Marine Exhibits:

Special chilling systems connected to heat exchangers are required to lower the water temperature of these exhibits to a suitable range (in this case, 48 to 54 degrees Fahrenheit). An emergency back-up generator supplies electrical power to the entire building, as all of the life-support systems (including these chillers) must remain operational at all times.

Nature's Neighborhood at The Toledo Zoo

Nature’s Neighborhood is a complete re-imagining of what a children’s zoo can be and Dunbar Mechanical helped with the highlight of the exhibit -- a running stream where kids take off their shoes and enjoy the world of water. The stream was such a hit when Nature's Neighborhood opened that within three weeks Dunbar was called back to expand the filtration system to handle the much higher than expected level of use.
